Bell Let’s Talk Day 2020 – Naturopathic Medicine and Mental Health

What day is Bell Let’s Talk Day

Bell Let’s Talk Day 2020 is on Wednesday, January 29th. Each year, Canadians are invited to participate in conversations about how to improve mental health initiatives across the country. This includes destigmatizing mental illness, promoting mental health awareness and offering solutions for those looking to improve their overall mental health and wellness.

At Gesund, our Naturopathic doctors offer an array of different support services that are designed to help restore and maintain the overall physical and mental well-being of our patients.

In this blog post, we’ll discuss the benefits of Bell Let’s Talk Day, how we plan to join the conversation about bettering mental health initiatives and how we hope our Naturopathic approach to medicine can help to improve the mental health of Canadians, both locally and nation-wide.

Let’s Talk!

Mental illness does not discriminate — it can affect people of all ages, cultures, backgrounds and income levels.

Given that one in five Canadians lives with mental illness, the likelihood of dealing with mental health issues or knowing someone affected by mental illness is startlingly high. Statistics report that by the age of 40, an estimated 50% of Canadians will have experienced some sort of mental illness in their life.

Unfortunately, one of the biggest obstacles encountered by those suffering from mental illness is overcoming stigma. Those suffering from mental health-related issues commonly find it difficult to discuss their symptoms, oftentimes out of fear of being perceived as “crazy”, “unstable” or “unmotivated”. Due to this negative perception, some Canadians may pass up the opportunity to pursue proper treatment or support.

The good news is that continuing to talk about mental health is working. Since its launch in 2010, Bell Let’s Talk has done an extraordinary job of increasing mental health awareness in Canada. According to a recent survey conducted by Nielsen Consumer Insights in 2019, 84% of Canadians claim that they are comfortable with discussing mental health, compared to a reported 42% back in 2012.

Now that we’ve covered the importance of Bell Let’s Talk Day, let’s talk about what we can do to join the conversation and promote our mental health solutions!

What Can We Do to Help?

At Gesund, we strive to lead by example when it comes to promoting mental wellness strategies. This includes offering Naturopathic Medicine as a solution to promote better mental health. We base our approach on helping our patients regain physical, emotional, spiritual and mental balance with their overall health.

Naturopathic Medicine as a Solution

We offer Naturopathic Medicine as a solution for depression, anxiety, chronic stress and other mental health-related conditions. Our system blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine.

As multiple factors in our everyday lives can lead to the deterioration of our mental health, we believe that a holistic approach to treatment is imperative. Several physicians offer medication as a solution to mental health conditions — and while pharmaceuticals can provide effective treatment and relief of symptoms for many patients, some patients’ symptoms may not fit pharmaceutical intervention. In these cases, Naturopathic Medicine may be another tool to consider to help enhance your mental health.

Naturopathic Medicine is designed to complement or sometimes replace any additional solution(s) by treating the body as a whole and targeting the root of any mental and/or emotional health issues. We also develop each treatment plan based on an individual’s needs (as opposed to a generality of symptoms).

Our therapeutic approaches use the following modalities to improve our patients’ mental well-being:

Clinical Nutrition: We strive to understand the impact that your diet may be having on not just your physical health, but your mental health as well.

Botanical Medicine: As experts in the art and science of botanical medicine, we are licenced to figure out which medicinal plants may offer a safe and effective option to treat certain mental health conditions.

Homeopathic Medicine: Homeopathic medicine consists of a dilution of natural combinations of plant, animal and mineral substances. Homeopathic remedies can be a safe and successful adjunct to stimulating the body’s natural healing forces.

Traditional Chinese Medicine / Acupuncture: Traditional Chinese practices have been known to achieve balance for the patient (both mentally and physically) for thousands of years. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that many emotional conditions can contribute to ill physical health.

Physical Medicine: Our physical medicine addresses several different issues (including stress, anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions). Our treatments include a wide range of therapies, including naturopathic manipulation of soft tissue and muscle, exercise therapy, ultrasound therapy and more.

Prevention and Lifestyle Counselling: Our experts are trained to help our patients establish better habits when it comes to diet, lifestyle, exercise and even their overall attitude. We believe that helping one to achieve a healthy and balanced mental and emotional state is key to overall wellness.
