Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA)

Motor vehicle accidents can be extremely stressful, both physically and emotionally. Even minor accidents may lead to injuries that worsen over time. It's crucial to seek medical attention as soon as possible, as early intervention can prevent long-term health complications. Consulting a medical doctor or chiropractor is highly recommended to determine the best course of action for recovery.

The Importance of Treatment

Restoring your health after a motor vehicle accident is the most critical step. Chiropractic care can play a significant role in your recovery. However, treatments can be expensive, and navigating the paperwork involved with insurance claims can add stress to an already difficult situation.

Our chiropractors are highly experienced in treating motor vehicle accident patients and handling the associated paperwork. We will work with you and your insurance provider to ensure your treatment is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Steps to Follow After a Motor Vehicle Accident:

  1. Report the Accident
Contact your broker, agent, or insurance company to report the accident. You’ll need the following details:

    • The name of the registered owner’s insurance company and their auto insurance policy number.
    • The make, model, year, and registration of the vehicle.
    • A detailed account of the accident.
  2. Read Your Ontario Automobile Policy (OAP 1)
This document outlines your insurance coverage, rights, and responsibilities. Familiarizing yourself with it ensures you understand what benefits and protections you are entitled to.

  3. Submit a Claim
Once you report your claim, a claims adjuster will be assigned to your case. They may require you to submit additional paperwork, including a Proof of Loss form.

What to Expect If You’re Injured:

  • In Ontario, Statutory Accident Benefits (SABS) are provided under every auto insurance policy, regardless of fault. These benefits ensure that you receive compensation if you, your passengers, or even pedestrians are injured or killed in a motor vehicle accident. Examples of benefits include:

    • Income Replacement Benefit: Compensates for lost income if you’re unable to work.
    • Non-Earner Benefit: Covers individuals who are completely unable to continue their normal activities but do not qualify for other benefits.
    • Caregiver Benefit: Provides compensation if you are the primary caregiver and can no longer care for a dependent.
    • Medical and Rehabilitation Benefits: Cover expenses related to medical care and rehabilitation services, including chiropractic treatments.
    • Attendant Care Benefit: Reimburses the cost of an aide or attendant if required.
    • Other Compensation: This may cover additional expenses, including family visits during recovery, housekeeping assistance, and educational costs.

You can review the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS) here for a complete and detailed explanation of your benefits.

Applying for Accident Benefits:

Once your claim is reported, your claims adjuster will provide you with an Accident Benefits Application Package. You must complete and submit all necessary forms. Once received, your insurance company will confirm which benefits you qualify for and any claims they are not prepared to cover.

The Accident Benefits Application Package includes:

Extended Health Benefits (EHB):

If you have extended health benefits through your employer or private insurance, they must be fully utilized before motor vehicle insurance coverage can be applied. Make sure to inform your chiropractor about any existing EHB coverage.

Next Steps:

Once your paperwork is in process, book an appointment with one of our chiropractors. We will work directly with your claims adjuster to apply for coverage and funding.
