I love explaining to my patients why things are the way they are. Developing an understanding of how our spines evolved is essential for caring for yourself. There are 3 keys concepts here:

1) All mammals (including our human evolution ancestors) that walk on four legs have spines like this:

Here the spine has one broad concave curve to it, also known as a full spine kyphosis. Actually – In really small humans – the ones that can’t even walk yet – the curve does still actually look like this. Babies still have only one, basic curve like the one above.

This all changes however as soon as we begin to walk in an upright position. Humans are generally unique in this transition and therefore so are their spines. What you start to see quite quickly is a transition in the lower back to form that nice and normal lordosis in the photo below. The mid back curve stays and then the neck curve also forms to balance out our upright posture.

2) Looking at the human spine from the front you can see that it is straight – we shouldn’t have any curves leaning sideways or rotation. This helps balance the stresses on the body from side to side.

But! Looking at our spines from the side – you can see that we have these 3 big curves in our spines.

3) Now we have these curves to maintain spinal health throughout our lives. Think of the spine as a spring now: when we walk and hit the ground, it allows forces to disperse and not travel all the way up to your brain, kind of like shocks in a car.
Now imagine your spine that is not in the right shape. Those shocks will be deformed. When it hits a force, that would now travel all the way up your spine to a point of pressure causing early degeneration to joints or even fractures to bones.

I see a lot of older patients that have lost these healthy curves over time with the stress and the forces on their spines quickly adding up. This can cause faster degeneration of the spine and more pain throughout the low back and neck.
