What is Manual Osteopathy?
Hi there, my name is Shannon Uppington and I am gesund’s Manual Osteopath! If you’re wondering “what the heck is Osteopathy?” do not worry, that’s why I am here! Manual Osteopathy is a gentle, hands on therapy that has some similarities to other forms of therapy that you are probably more familiar with, such as Massage Therapy and Chiropractic. Osteopathy is a terrific form of therapy on its own, but it is also an amazing complimentary therapy and works great when used in conjunction with other forms of manual therapy.
Osteopathy takes a holistic approach to health and focuses on treating the source of your pain, not just the signs and symptoms. By treating the root cause of your problem, you feel better faster. Manual Osteopath’s work on many parts of the body including the spine, joints, muscles, ligaments, organs and cranium (brain). Manual Osteopaths treat musculoskeletal disorders through the mobilization of bones and joints. They also use a variety of techniques to help restore function to the body such as muscle energy techniques (METs), soft tissue therapy, cranial osteopathy and visceral manipulation. Many other techniques may be used depending on the practitioner’s training.
Osteopathy has been shown to be an effective treatment for chronic and certain types of acute pain. Some conditions that can be treated by osteopathy include: headaches and migraines, digestive issues, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis and golfer’s elbow, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, back pain, shoulder injuries, constipation and diarrhea, patella-femoral pain/achy knees, infertility/PMS, TMJ pain and so much more. A study conducted by the University of North Texas showed that patients who followed a short Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment regimen had significant improvements in their chronic low back pain.
There are many benefits that come with Manual Osteopathy with the most common being decreased or resolution of pain, increased muscle and joint range of motion, decreased muscle and joint stiffness, improved blood flow, enhanced immune system function, increased muscle and spinal flexibility, promotes relaxation, improved digestive function and more!
