CHIROPRACTIC

Our team of chiropractors at gesund practices a drug-free, manual approach to health care that includes patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment. In particular, chiropractors assess patients for disorders related to the spine, pelvis, extremity joints, and their effect on the nervous system. Chiropractic treatments are for more than just back pain.

What Is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a regulated health profession recognized by statute in all Canadian provinces and American states. Canadian chiropractors undergo an intensive four-year, full-time course of study following three years of university before qualifying to undertake national examinations and become licensed to practice.

Chiropractic is a healing discipline firmly grounded in science. Few other health care interventions have been assessed as extensively as chiropractic manipulation, both in terms of safety and effectiveness. There have been at least six formal government studies into chiropractic worldwide over the last 25 years and all have concluded that contemporary chiropractic care is safe, effective, cost-effective, and have recommended public funding for chiropractic services.

In addition, there have been countless scientific clinical studies assessing the appropriateness, effectiveness, and/or cost-effectiveness of spinal manipulation or chiropractic manipulation, most notably for low back pain.

What Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?

Chiropractors are experts trained in the neuromusculoskeletal system. They diagnose and treat disorders of the spine and other body joints by adjusting the spinal column or through other corrective manipulation. Chiropractors provide conservative management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders including, but not limited to, back, neck and head pain (over 90 percent of conditions treated). They also advise patients on corrective exercises, lifestyle and nutrition.

What Happens During a Treatment?

During your first visit, the chiropractor will want to know about your health history as well as your current complaint. Your home and work life as well as your level of physical activity may also affect your health, so don’t be surprised to be asked questions about these.

Although chiropractors use their hands for most treatments, they also use other methods such as heat, light, specialized adjusting instruments, ultrasound, electrotherapy, personalized exercise programs, muscle-testing and balancing. Your chiropractor can also give you information and guidance on how you can stay healthy through proper nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes.

What Is an Adjustment Or Manipulation?

A chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is a high velocity, low amplitude thrust that is applied to joints of the body that are restricted based on a thorough examination. A popping sound may occur with an adjustment/manipulation. This is simply the gas and fluid moving around that surrounds each joint. This is not a dangerous or detrimental phenomenon, nor is it necessary for therapeutic benefit. Quite simply, the sound produced is similar to opening a can of soda for the first time.

Do I Need a Referral From My Medical Doctor To See a Chiropractor?

No. Chiropractors are primary healthcare providers, just like medical doctors. Simply call our clinic to schedule an appointment or visit our website to make an appointment with our chiropractor.

What is A.R.T.?

ART is a patented soft tissue system/movement based massage technique. It is used to treat a variety of conditions including: problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.

Examples of conditions:

  • headache
  • back pain
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • shin splints

  • shoulder pain
  • plantar fasciitis
  • knee pain
  • tennis elbow

These conditions, as well as others can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

How Do Overuse Conditions Occur?

Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc),
  • accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma),
  • not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia).

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons can cause tendonitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

What Is an A.R.T. Treatment Like?

At gesund Dr. Joseph Csumrik can assess your soft tissues relating to the pain you may feel. Using his hands to evaluate the texture, tone and movement of soft tissues and identifying targets for treatment will be part of your initial assessment and each subsequent appointment. Abnormal tissues are treated by the combination of tension with very specific patient movements.

CUSTOM FOOT ORTHOTICS

About Custom Foot Orthotics

Custom foot orthotics are corrective devices made to assist a foot that fails biomechanically, to function normally.
Orthotics are made to control abnormal foot function, re-establish proper weight distribution and improve overall biomechanics.

Toronto residents can benefit from orthotic inserts or orthotic footwear. Even if you don’t suffer from any obvious foot pain you may have some biomechanical imbalances that could lead to problems later if left untreated.

Moreover, some clinical conditions may be present without any obvious foot problems. Subtle imbalances in the foot are amplified as they go up the leg, knee, hip and back creating symptoms of pain in other areas of the body without presenting in the feet.

Your Foot and gesund Custom Foot Orthotics

At gesund in Toronto our orthotics are truly custom. We first perform a clinical biomechanical evaluation to determine the amount of correction necessary. Then a neutral position plaster foot mold of your foot is taken to yield a positive plaster cast. Your orthotic is derived from this platform with the corrections necessary to address your specific situation. The proper use of these corrective devices should significantly reduce a patient’s symptoms or foot related pain and discomfort. Some conditions may be severe and have already undergone osseous (bone) change. In this case the custom foot orthotics will prevent further damage and promote soft tissue restoration.

Some conditions commonly helped by the use of orthotic footwear include:

  • Achille’s Tendonitis
  • Calluses
  • Corns
  • Diabetic Neuropathy
  • Heel Spurs
  • Plantar Fascitis
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Sesamoiditis

However as previously mentioned, EVERYONE can benefit from the use of custom made orthotics.

You may choose from inserts to be placed in your existing footwear or select a pair of shoes from our extensive catalogue.

Our selection of shoes include, Nike, Clark’s, Ecco, Adidas, Puma, Timberland, Ascics, Mephisto, Hush Puppies, Birkenstock and many more.

Custom Foot Orthotics are not covered by OHIP. You may be covered under your existing insurance policy from work or Extended Health plan. Check with your benefits plan to see if you have coverage.
